Organic Beauty Products are products which contain natural ingredients that are grown without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or chemicals, and do not contain chemicals or dyes.
What do organic beauty products NOT contain ?
Well apart from the ingredients we have already mentioned, ie chemicals and dyes, there are many other ingredients which are widely used in the beauty industry, but which we prefer not to find in organic hair and skin care treatments, such as parabens, propylene glycol (unless from a natural source), PVP/VA copolymer, triclosan, stearalkonium chloride, sodium lauryl sulphate, synthetic colours (FD and C or D and C followed by a colour and a number), DEA (diethanolamine), TEA (triethandamine), MIT (methylesolhiaz dinone), mineral oil, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea, parfum/fragrance (unless from a natural source), phthalates, formaldehyde, PEG (polyethylene glycol) or any other petroleum based substances, coal tar dyes, lead, mercury or nanoparticles.
What are the Benefits of organic beauty products ?
There are many benefits, both for our skin and for our planet when we choose the eco-friendly option of Natural Organic Skincare, from bio-degradable packaging to fewer potentially harmful chemicals being absorbed into your skin.
If you haven’t really ever considered the idea of chemicals being absorbed into your skin just read the ingredients list of a typical high street hand cream, then rub some onto the palm of your hand and watch it disappear! The chemicals don’t just evaporate, they are also absorbed into your body as they would if you chose to eat them on a sandwich and we are sure you wouldn’t choose to do that!
How do I know if beauty products are organic beauty products ?
Obviously you can read the ingredients on the product and then look up any ingredients that you don’t know to be natural and organic, but you may still be unsure if the product is really organic. The best way is to buy organic beauty products from a supplier you trust who have done the hard work for you and sourced natural organic beauty products with the relevant certification.
To be labelled ‘100% organic’ (as the name suggests) 100% of the ingredients must be 100% organic. To be labelled ‘organic’ 95% or above of the ingredients must be organic and to be labelled ‘made with organic ingredients’ at least 70% of the ingredients must be organic.
When choosing organic beauty products reassuring logos to look for include –
Demeter (international biodynamic accreditation)
Ecocert (France)
BDIH (Germany)
NASSA (Australia)
CAQ (Quebec)
USDA (USA)
Also remember that organic beauty products can include natural mineral cosmetics, organic haircare, organic soap and organic baby products.
